For :iconmlp-atg-alumni: Week 29: Show us how it's done!

Well, I certainly don't set myself up as a model, but this is how I mainly draw pony stuff now, hand inking and digital coloring. Berry Punch selected by Owloysius-bot in the chat.

Couple things I forgot to put in text: I don't always do sketch in same order, sometimes full mane/head/face is done before body is drawn, etc. I like to work on a sturdy drawing paper, 80lb, because I pencil too hard and I need it to stand up to rough erasing. I always try to scale down the finished piece by about 50% because seeing the lineart at larger than lifesize is not flattering, and shows just how shaky my hand is. :P

Now this is really cool. And actually drawing and inking on paper, then scanning, cleaning up and coloring? You do all the steps that make it feel like... it's a real *thing*. This is the kinda stuff I'd like to do someday, as well as getting better at flat-out digital drawing.

So you use GIMP for all your digital stuff, not just adjusting the color levels, or...?

Thanks! I mostly use GIMP but also sometimes Inkscape for things like panel/text layout in comics, since it has easier/clearer alignment tools.

'Alignment tools' sound like something I'd find quite useful myself. I've mainly been using SAI since a great artist friend of mine swears by it, and I learn more and more neat things about it the more I use it, and I use Paint.NET for typed text and some other things, but I've hardly begun exploring various programs and how one might be better or easier for a certain thing than others, etc. A lot of people just go with photoshop for everything, but it's all scary and intimidating and expensive, and I'd feel awful bad pirating it if I'm going to use it for a serious/longterm intrest like this...
